THE NEHEMIAH GENERATION

REBUILDERS. BUILDERS. REFORMERS.

AFRICA, IT IS TIME TO BUILD.

One of the greatest biblical lessons on building, rebuilding and national transformation is the story of Nehemiah.

Nehemiah was not originally a builder.

He was a cupbearer to the king.

But when he heard that Jerusalem was in ruins, its walls broken down and its gates burned, something happened inside him.

He cared.

Nehemiah 1:3–4 tells us that when he heard about the condition of Jerusalem, he sat down, wept, mourned, fasted and prayed before God.

Before Nehemiah rebuilt the walls, the burden was built inside the man.

And perhaps this is where rebuilding begins.

Someone must care enough about what is broken to accept responsibility for helping rebuild it.

Nehemiah prayed.

He sought God.

He developed a plan.

He approached the king.

He mobilised resources.

He travelled to Jerusalem.

He inspected the walls.

He organised the people.

He allocated responsibility.

He dealt with opposition.

And then they built.

Family by family.

Section by section.

Gate by gate.

Wall by wall.

Nehemiah did not rebuild Jerusalem alone.

THE TASK OF REBUILDING WAS COLLECTIVE.

That is an important lesson for Africa.

BUILDING A NATION IS NOT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF GOVERNMENT ALONE.

Government has a responsibility.

But so do citizens.

Families.

Parents.

Teachers.

Churches.

Businesses.

Entrepreneurs.

Professionals.

Institutions.

Communities.

Young people.

Leaders.

Believers.

Nation-building is a collective task.

We have to go back to the basics and examine how we do everything.

Because transformation doesn't only happen in parliaments, presidential offices and boardrooms.

It begins with small responsibilities.

How do you raise your children?

How do you treat people?

How do you manage money?

How do you work when nobody is watching?

How do you keep your home?

How do you treat your parents?

How do you conduct your business?

How do you use public resources?

How do you serve your community?

How do you respond when you see something broken?

How you do one thing eventually influences how you do everything.

Every national problem was once a smaller problem somewhere in an individual, a family, a community, an institution or a system that was allowed to grow.

So perhaps rebuilding Africa must happen from the ground up.

REBUILDING THE INDIVIDUAL

Before we rebuild nations, we must rebuild people.

Before we transform territories, we must transform individuals.

This is where human development, priesthood, faith and responsibility meet.

Faith practice must become a transformation practice.

The Church cannot only produce believers who know how to attend services.

We must produce believers who can become:

ARCHITECTS OF CHANGE.

BUILDERS.

REFORMERS.

REBUILDERS.

People equipped spiritually, intellectually, economically and socially to transform the territories God has entrusted to them.

God's picture of restoration is powerful:

Ezekiel 36:33–36 speaks of ruined places being rebuilt and desolate land becoming fruitful again.

Jeremiah 30:18–22 speaks about restoration cities being rebuilt, communities being established and the covenant declaration:

You shall be My people, and I will be your God.

This is more than rebuilding walls.

It is the rebuilding of people, systems, communities and territories.

THE CREDENTIALS OF A REBUILDER

1. UNCONDITIONAL PASSION FOR GOD

A true Kingdom builder must love God more than the walls.

Love God more than your vision.

Love God more than your purpose.

Love God more than your business.

Love God more than the results.

Our relationship with God cannot depend on whether something is working or not working.

Proverbs 3:5–6:

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

The foundation of the builder is first God Himself.

2. HIGH-LEVEL SPIRITUAL ILLUMINATION AND INTELLIGENCE

We must become intentional about building builders.

It is not enough to bring people to salvation without developing their capacity to represent Christ effectively.

There must be:

SALVATION → TRANSFORMATION → EMPOWERMENT → PURPOSE.

People need the life of Christ and the mind of Christ** to produce Kingdom results.

Transformation requires doctrine.

Kingdom principles.

Wisdom for living.

Knowledge.

Understanding.

A Word-compliant worldview.

We must learn to look at the world through the Word.

Dominion is maturity-dependent.

Isaiah 60:1 says:

Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.

John 1:5 reminds us:

And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

Acts 20:32 speaks about the Word of God's grace being able to build us up.

Before people become builders of territories, they themselves must be built.

3. A CLEAR VISION OF GOD'S AGENDA OF RESTORATION

We must understand God's programme.

God's programme for individuals.

God's programme for maturity through discipleship.

And God's programme for territories and nations.

There is a message that saves, and there is a message that equips transformed people to become agents of change.

We need both.

EVANGELISM.

DISCIPLESHIP.

TERRITORIAL TRANSFORMATION.

Christians must understand that their faith has implications beyond themselves.

4. UNDERSTAND THE GOD–MAN PARTNERSHIP

Rebuilding requires divine partnership.

There are things God has ordained to accomplish through yielded men and women.

Nehemiah prayed to God and then Nehemiah got up and built.

Prayer did not replace responsibility.

Faith did not replace planning.

Trusting God did not replace leadership.

GOD + YIELDED PEOPLE + RESPONSIBILITY + ACTION.

We partner with God to fulfil His purposes on earth.

5. CARRY A KING–PRIEST MENTALITY

Believers must understand both priesthood and dominion.

We represent God spiritually, but we must also represent His principles in the territories where He places us.

The marketplace.

Education.

Government.

Business.

Technology.

Agriculture.

Media.

Healthcare.

Families.

Communities.

Nations.

We cannot separate our spirituality from our responsibility.

6. UNDERSTAND THE POWER OF UNITY

You cannot rebuild a nation alone.

Nehemiah understood this.

Different people rebuilt different sections of the wall.

Different people carried different responsibilities.

That is the power of the Body rather than the individual.

Our graces differ.

Our experiences with God differ.

Our skills differ.

Our assignments differ.

But everyone has something to offer.

Vision without collaboration can create limitation.

The mature believer understands:

KNOWLEDGE.

RESPONSIBILITY.

MATURITY.

UNITY.

The future may require us to rediscover principles that have always worked.

As Ecclesiastes reminds us:

There is no new thing under the sun.

WHAT MAKES A NATION GREAT?

Rebuilding and national transformation require deliberate foundations.

Africa is in a season where we must seriously ask:

WHAT DOES IT ACTUALLY TAKE TO BUILD GREAT NATIONS?

 1. VISION

Vision is seeing things as they ought to be.

It is a clearly defined picture of a desired future.

People struggle to follow what they cannot see.

Therefore:

CLARITY OF VISION IS A SECRET TO FOLLOWERSHIP.

No nation can sustainably become great without a clear vision of what it wants to become.

Habakkuk 2:2:

Write the vision, and make it plain…

Families need vision.

Organisations need vision.

Communities need vision.

Nations need vision.

And individuals need vision.

2. WELL-DEFINED VALUES

What do we believe?

What principles govern us?

What behaviours will we tolerate?

What behaviours will we refuse?

Values are the belief systems that govern a predefined territory.

A nation cannot consistently rise above the values practised by its people.

3. EDUCATION  FORMAL AND INFORMAL

We must redefine education beyond certificates.

Education should develop the ability to:

READ.

WRITE.

COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY.

THINK CONSTRUCTIVELY.

APPLY KNOWLEDGE.

ANSWER QUESTIONS.

MEET NEEDS.

CREATE SOLUTIONS.

SOLVE PROBLEMS.

Education must become a tool for human development and national transformation.

Knowledge should eventually produce solutions.

4. VISIONARY AND TRANSFORMATIVE LEADERSHIP

Leadership is not only for presidents, governors, CEOs, pastors or politicians.

LEADERSHIP STARTS WITH EVERYBODY.

Leadership starts at every level.

In the individual.

In the home.

In the family.

In the school.

In the church.

In the workplace.

In the community.

Then in the nation.

This is why leadership development must happen **from the ground up.**

Start at home.

Take care of your children.

Clean your environment.

Respect your parents.

Keep your word.

Manage what has been entrusted to you.

Show up.

Take responsibility.

Solve problems where you are.

Because builders, reformers and rebuilders are leaders.

People may listen to you speak, but they will not necessarily follow you unless your life demonstrates leadership.

5. ECONOMIC STRENGTH

Great nations require productive people.

We must teach the skills of:

VALUE CREATION.

PRODUCTIVITY.

INVESTMENT.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP.

STEWARDSHIP.

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT.

And these lessons should begin young.

Families must teach them.

Schools must teach them.

Churches must teach them.

Communities must reinforce them.

We must also understand that wealth built with integrity takes time.

Grace received must be maximised, developed and utilised before it bears its fullest results.

Africa must raise generations that understand how to create value rather than depending entirely on what they can receive.

6. EXCELLENT AND FUNCTIONAL SECURITY ARCHITECTURE

Security is everybody's responsibility.

We must become vigilant.

We must protect our communities.

We must have courageous and cultured conversations about the things destroying society

Security is not simply a police or military matter.

When corruption, greed, violence and lawlessness are tolerated, economic development also suffers.

People will hesitate to invest where they do not feel safe.

Building safe societies is therefore part of building prosperous societies.

 7. FAITH AND SPIRITUALITY

Faith matters in nation-building.

People think, act and behave according to their deepest convictions.

Love.

Giving.

Forgiveness.

Justice.

Fairness.

Integrity.

Self-control.

Compassion.

These faith-derived virtues influence how societies function.

When faith and spirituality are practised responsibly, they can become powerful catalysts for building better people and better nations.

But faith must never become an excuse for hatred, fanaticism, irresponsibility or ignorance.

We must therefore be careful about who mentors the next generation in understanding God and faith.

KNOW GOD FIRST.

Before becoming a builder, reformer or rebuilder, know God.

John 3:16:

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son…

Romans 3:23:

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.

And Daniel 11:32 gives us a powerful picture of the people God can use:

The people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.

KNOW GOD.

BE TRANSFORMED.

DEVELOP CAPACITY.

ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY.

BUILD.

Nehemiah teaches us that broken walls do not rebuild themselves.

Someone must see.

Someone must care.

Someone must pray.

Someone must develop a vision.

Someone must organise.

Someone must mobilise others.

Someone must accept responsibility.

And then people must build together.

The walls of Jerusalem were rebuilt because a burden became a vision, the vision became a plan, and the plan became collective action.

That is the lesson for Africa.

THE TASK OF REBUILDING IS A COLLECTIVE TASK.

We cannot outsource the entire future of our nations to government.

Every family we strengthen matters.

Every child we raise well matters.

Every honest business we build matters.

Every young person we equip matters.

Every problem we solve matters.

Every institution we strengthen matters.

Every community we improve matters.

Every value we model matters.

Every wall we rebuild matters.

BRICK BY BRICK.

PERSON BY PERSON.

FAMILY BY FAMILY.

COMMUNITY BY COMMUNITY.

INSTITUTION BY INSTITUTION.

NATION BY NATION.

AFRICA, IT IS OUR SEASON TO BUILD.

REBUILDERS.

BUILDERS.

REFORMERS.

ARCHITECTS OF CHANGE.

The anchor verse

Nehemiah 2:18 (KJV):

Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.

That is your Builders Africa verse.

Nehemiah did not simply see broken walls and complain about them. He accepted responsibility, sought God, developed a vision, mobilised people and built.

The key takeaway

SEE WHAT IS BROKEN. SEEK GOD. ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY. RISE UP. BUILD.

Nehemiah's story teaches us that rebuilding is not a spectator assignment.

Jerusalem's walls were broken. The gates were burned. Nehemiah could have said, Someone should do something. Instead, he asked what he could do.

And he did not build alone.

Nehemiah 3 shows families, craftsmen, leaders, priests and ordinary people taking responsibility for different sections of the wall. Everyone had a portion to build.

That connects powerfully to your nation-building message:

Africa will not be rebuilt by government alone. Every one of us has a section of the wall.

Your section may be your family, children, business, profession, church, school, community, industry or institution.

Start there.

The Nehemiah lesson is therefore:

You don't have to rebuild the entire wall.

But you must take responsibility for your part of it.

And there is another powerful verse for the mindset of builders, Nehemiah 4:6.

So built we the wall… for the people had a mind to work.

That gives you two powerful pillars:

Nehemiah 2:18 — THE CALL:

Let us rise up and build.

Nehemiah 4:6 — THE MINDSET:

The people had a mind to work.

AFRICA, LET US RISE UP AND BUILD.

Everyone has a wall.

Everyone has a responsibility.

Everyone has something to contribute.

Start with yourself.

Start with your family.

Start with what is in your hands.

Start where you are.

Then build.

BELIEVE. BRAND. BUILD AFRICA.
