MN Collective "BELIEVE. BRAND.  BUILD"

A brand is not just a logo, a colour, or a product. It is an identity. It is a promise. It is what people think about when they hear your name.

Key to note about most Luxury branding unlike our famous mass brands like Nike is many luxury brands don't rely on signature lines instead they focus on heritage. Exclusivity. Design identity and Emotional storytelling. They don't push one slogan they let brand name itself e.g. Gucci, Prada, Ferrari

Seth Godin, in This Is Marketing, makes an interesting observation. If someone opened a Nike Hotel anywhere in the world, most people would already have an idea of what it might feel like, despite Nike being a shoe company. Why? Because Nike has spent decades clearly communicating who they are. We identify them with the swoosh logo and the words "Just Do It."

That is the power of a brand.

Which brings me to a bigger question.

What is your personal brand?

What defines you?

Who are you?

How would people describe you in two, three, four, or five words?

If you were stripped of your office, your title, your position, your status, and everything attached to your name, who would remain?

This is the same question that starts almost every interview:

"Tell us about yourself."

"Who are you?"

The answer to that question often determines everything that follows.

Yet many people have never taken time to define themselves.

Many businesses have never taken time to define themselves.

Many communities have never taken time to define themselves.

A strapline or slogan is simply a short statement that captures what you stand for. It communicates your identity, your values, and your promise. It tells people what to expect from you.

If you don't define yourself, others will define you.

If you are not known for something, you become vulnerable to being known for anything.

Personally, I like being different.

I like looking for something in everything I do that sets me apart from the noise and the crowd.

I like the unconventional.

I dislike how everyone does everything the same way simply because everyone else is doing it.

You do not have to reinvent the wheel.

But you should look for something that makes your wheel different.

Something that makes people remember you.

Take a simple example.

Why are all M-Pesa shops almost identical?

Of course, the branding speaks for itself. The moment you see the green colours and the M-Pesa sign, you know exactly what it is.

Most offer similar services:

Airtime sales

Bill payments

Paybill support

Fuliza services

SIM cards

Phone accessories

Scratch cards

Snacks and beverages

Phone sales

Cyber services

Basic phone repairs

Software installation

But what else could make your M-Pesa shop stand out?

Could it be:

Fast and efficient service?

Friendly and polite customer care?

Always having enough float available?

Operating 24 hours?

Enhanced security, especially during late hours?

Creating a safe environment for customers?

Loyalty rewards for repeat customers?

A comfortable waiting area?

Weekly promotions?

Free airtime rewards?

Community engagement?

Sometimes the difference is not in what you sell.

The difference is in how you serve.

The same applies to local brands.

Pizza Inn is known for its Tuesday Buy One Get One Free promotion.

Furniture Palace is known for its major annual sales.

Hotpoint is recognizable through its branding, stores, and consistent communication.

*****

The things that define a brand must be communicated repeatedly until they become part of the public memory.

Consistency builds identity.

Identity builds trust.

Trust builds loyalty.

The same principle applies to people.

What do you represent?

Integrity?

Excellence?

Creativity?

Leadership?

Service?

Faith?

Discipline?

Innovation?

Kindness?

Courage?

Consistency?

What would people say if asked to describe you without mentioning your name?

The strongest brands in the world know exactly who they are.

The strongest people do too.

******Today, I challenge you to define yourself.*******

Not by your job.

Not by your title.

Not by your possessions.

But by the values, principles, and characteristics that make you who you are.

Be known for something.

Stand for something.

Represent something.

Because when people know exactly what you stand for, they know exactly why you matter.

Be on a quest. You are brand? Describe yourself in two tonthree words? @Raymond John

"The world's strongest brands are remembered not for what they sell, but for what they represent. The same is true of people. Define your values, communicate them consistently, and give the world a reason to remember your name."
