WHO IS SITTING AT YOUR TABLE?
We have heard the statement a million times:
You are the sum of the people you associate with.
They say that if you surround yourself with five millionaires or billionaires, you will become the sixth.
But how does that actually work?
It is not simply about hanging around wealthy people, playing golf, attending dinners, taking photographs or appearing at networking events.
Proximity alone does not produce transformation.
You benefit from the right associations when their thinking challenges your thinking, their discipline influences your habits, their experience shortens your learning curve and their honesty exposes your blind spots.
The right people do more than give you access to a room.
They pour into you.
Tell you the truth.
Hold you accountable.
Challenge your excuses.
Champion your vision.
Connect you to opportunities.
Introduce you to investors.
Help you solve problems.
Sit on your advisory board.
Finance your idea or prepare you to become investment-ready.
Stand with you when building becomes difficult.
Some may never invest money in your business, but their wisdom, credibility, connections and belief in you may become equally valuable.
That is how association works.
So let me ask you again:
WHO IS SITTING AT YOUR TABLE?
Imagine that you could select 12 people to sit at your table your personal board for the rest of your life.
Who would you choose?
Who would advise you spiritually?
Who would challenge your business thinking?
Who would guide your career?
Who would sharpen your leadership?
Who would tell you the truth when everyone else applauds?
Who would protect your name when you are not in the room?
Who would help you recover after failure?
Who would open the right doors?
Who would build with you?
And who would take a bullet for the vision?
Choose carefully, because not everybody deserves a permanent seat.
The wrong associations will discourage you, distract you, question everything you attempt and quietly watch from a distance. Some will only return when you succeed or when you have built something they can benefit from.
Be careful who you listen to.
Not everyone who has access to you should have influence over you. Not everyone sitting near you belongs on your board.
Surround yourself with people who are visionary, purposeful, optimistic, disciplined and solution-focused people who will not merely watch you build, but will help you become the person capable of building.
Great movements are not built by isolated individuals. They are built by communities of people united by purpose.
Africa will not be transformed by lone heroes. It will be built through strong relationships, trusted partnerships, shared knowledge, courageous collaboration and people willing to carry the vision together.
So take out a piece of paper and write down 12 names.
Your mentors.
Advisers.
Truth-tellers.
Builders.
Connectors.
Champions.
Spiritual guides.
Strategic partners.
Then ask yourself:
Are these people actually at my table or am I only admiring them from a distance?
And one more important question:
Whose table are you qualified to sit at, and what value do you bring when you arrive?
Do not only look for people who can build you.
Become someone who helps others build too.
BUILD YOUR TABLE.
CHOOSE YOUR BOARD.
PROTECT YOUR VISION.
