Skills for builders
For builders, I’d focus on skills that move someone from idea → solution → execution → sustainable impact.
Core Skills for Builders
1. Problem Solving — See problems as opportunities and design practical solutions.
2. Critical Thinking — Question assumptions, analyse situations and make sound decisions.
3. Creativity & Innovation — Imagine what does not yet exist and improve what already does.
4. Digital & AI Literacy— Know how to use technology, AI and digital tools to build faster and smarter.
5. Financial Literacy— Understand money, pricing, costs, profit, cash flow and investment.
6. Communication & Storytelling— Explain an idea clearly enough for customers, partners, teams and investors to believe in it.
7. Sales & Negotiation— Builders must know how to sell their idea, product, service and vision.
8. Brand Building — Understand positioning, reputation, customer experience and differentiation.
9. Execution & Project Management — Turn ideas into action: plan, prioritise, test, measure and finish.
10. Leadership & Collaboration— Build teams, relationships and partnerships; learn to work with people.
11. Research & Customer Understanding — Listen, observe and understand what people actually need before building.
12. Systems Thinking— Don't just solve something once; ask, How can this work repeatedly and at scale?
13. Resilience & Adaptability— Handle failure, rejection, uncertainty and change without abandoning the mission.
14. Networking & Relationship Building— Know how to find mentors, collaborators, customers and opportunities.
15. Ethics & Character— Build with integrity, responsibility and a purpose beyond yourself.
For MN Collective / School of Builders, I would simplify these into 5 Master Skills:
THINK → CREATE → COMMUNICATE → EXECUTE → SCALE
That could become the foundation of a Builders Skills Framework for children, teens and young adults.
