THE BUILDER’S JOURNEY: GUARDIAN ANGEL BUILD YOUR LIFE, NOT JUST YOUR CAREER

There is something I have come to appreciate about watching a builder.

You begin to understand that the harvest is never the story. The harvest is the evidence of everything that happened when nobody was paying attention or paying attention.

That is what makes Guardian Angel’s journey interesting and as a focus for Build Thursday series today.

I have closely followed his.life since they met with the wife Esther and his farming journey not just the recent onion harvest, but the process of watching him acquire land, develop it, put infrastructure in place, invest in water, establish irrigation, plant crops and gradually turn an idea into something productive.

Today, people can look at Waingo Farm and see onions, cabbages, maize, traditional vegetables, poultry and now developments around fish and azolla. Recent reports say the 20-acre Machakos farm has borehole infrastructure, water towers and irrigation supporting crops including onions, maize, cabbages and traditional vegetables. Guardian has also shown work on a fish pond and azolla system. ([The Standard])

But I see something bigger.

I see a builder.

A BUILDER DOES NOT BUILD ONLY ONE THING

Guardian Angel is known first as a gospel musician.

Music is his craft.

It is where many people know him.

It is where he has built his audience, his reputation, his performances and his income.

But he has not allowed his identity to stop there.

He is also building in agriculture.

He has invested in land.

He has developed a farm.

He has invested in water infrastructure.

He is growing onions.

Cabbages.

Maize.

Traditional vegetables.

He keeps chickens.

He has been developing a fish pond and exploring azolla as part of the farm system. ([Tuko.co.ke - Kenya news.])

And this is where the idea of the builder becomes important.

A builder is not necessarily a person with one job title.

A builder is someone who understands that life itself must be constructed.

Your career must be built.

Your finances must be built.

Your health must be built.

Your home must be built.

Your relationships must be built.

Your reputation must be built.

Your knowledge must be built.

Your assets must be built.

Your spiritual life must be built.

Your legacy must be built.

You cannot outsource the architecture of your life.

BUILD YOUR LIFE SO YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE EVERYWHERE

One of the things I admire about Guardian Angel and Esther Musila is the apparent willingness to live their lives without constantly trying to answer everyone.

Their marriage has attracted public attention and criticism over the years.

People have had opinions about their age difference.

People have questioned their choices.

People have questioned where they built their home.

People have had opinions about their investments.

But at some point, a builder has to make a decision:

Will I build my life according to the noise, or according to the vision, Gods purpose?

Guardian has publicly explained that building and investing in Machakos was partly a practical decision because the location is much closer to Nairobi and therefore easier for him to monitor his projects. He has described the distance to his ancestral home in Butere as making management of farming activities less practical. ([Pulse Kenya])

That is a builder thinking.

Not:

What will people say?

But:

What makes sense for what I am building?

That is wisdom.

DO NOT BE ALL OVER THE PLACE

One of the greatest lessons for the next generation of builders is focus on one thing and master it.

You cannot build everything.

You cannot chase every opportunity.

You cannot respond to every critic.

You cannot attend every room.

You cannot follow every trend.

You cannot explain every decision.

And you certainly cannot build a meaningful life while constantly comparing your blueprint with somebody else's.

A builder must know what matters.

There is a difference between being multi-skilled and being scattered.

Guardian Angel's story illustrates an interesting form of diversification: music remains part of his identity and income-generating work, while agriculture provides another avenue for building assets and productive capacity.

That is very different from randomly jumping from one idea to another.

Diversification should strengthen your life, not fragment it.

Build your core.

Then build around it.

A SETTLED MAN BUILDS DIFFERENTLY

There is something else I see in the journey.

Settlement.

Not perfection.

Not a life without problems.

Settlement.

Knowing where you are.

Knowing who you are.

Knowing who is beside you.

Knowing what you are building.

Knowing what deserves your energy.

Knowing what you can ignore.

A settled person does not need to be everywhere.

A settled person does not need everybody's approval.

A settled person can say:

This is my life. This is my assignment. This is what I am building.

Guardian Angel and Esther have chosen to build a home and investments in a place that makes sense for the life they are creating, rather than simply following the traditional expectation that a man must build only in his ancestral home. Guardian has specifically spoken about the practical advantage of being close enough to monitor his farm and other projects. ([Pulse Kenya])

That is a powerful lesson.

Do not build according to outdated expectations when you have the wisdom to build according to purpose.

THROUGH WISDOM A HOUSE IS BUILT”

The Bible says:

Through wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established — Proverbs 24:3

Notice the language.

It does not say a house is built by money alone.

It says wisdom.

And that applies far beyond a physical house.

Wisdom builds careers.

Wisdom builds businesses.

Wisdom builds marriages.

Wisdom builds wealth.

Wisdom builds reputations.

Wisdom knows when to speak.

Wisdom knows when to remain silent.

Wisdom knows whom to learn from.

Wisdom knows whom not to listen to.

Wisdom knows when to move.

Wisdom knows when to wait.

A wise builder does not reject advice simply because it comes from someone different.

Learn from who you need to learn from.

Take the lesson.

Improve the system.

Then keep building.

THE BUILDER DOES NOT LISTEN TO EVERY NAYSAYER

When Guardian Angel first showed the land that would become Waingo Farm, there were people who questioned whether productive farming could work in the dry Machakos environment.

Reports have documented how critics doubted the vision because of the area's dry conditions. Guardian responded by developing water infrastructure, including a borehole, water towers and irrigation systems. ([Tuko.co.ke - Kenya news.])

This is one of the most important lessons for builders:

A person who cannot see your vision is not necessarily qualified to determine its possibility.

Listen.

Evaluate.

Learn.

But don't surrender your vision simply because someone else cannot see what you see.

Sometimes the person saying it cannot be done is describing their experience not your future.

You need discernment.

There are people whose criticism can save you from a mistake.

There are also people whose criticism is simply evidence that they cannot imagine what you are trying to create.

A wise builder learns the difference.

FROM MUSIC TO FARMING: BECOME MULTI-SKILLED

The future will belong increasingly to people who can combine skills.

Guardian Angel's story demonstrates this beautifully.

He can operate in entertainment.

He understands performance.

He understands audiences.

He has built a music career.

He performs.

He creates music.

He has events.

And now he is learning agriculture.

That means he is not simply becoming a farmer.

He is becoming a multi-skilled builder.

And that is what we should teach the next generation.

Don't only ask:

What job do you want?

Ask:

What capabilities do you want to have?

Can you communicate?

Can you sell?

Can you negotiate?

Can you manage people?

Can you understand money?

Can you use technology?

Can you understand AI?

Can you build a brand?

Can you read a market?

Can you manage an asset?

Can you solve a problem?

Can you learn a completely new industry?

The builder of tomorrow will not survive on one skill.

Build your skill stack.

LOOK AT AN ONION AND SEE AN ECONOMY

Now let's return to the onion.

People see the harvest.

A builder sees the entire value chain.

Before an onion reaches the market, someone had to prepare the land.

Someone supplied seed.

Someone provided fertiliser and crop inputs.

Someone supplied irrigation equipment.

Someone drilled the borehole.

Someone installed the pipes.

Someone constructed the water system.

Someone worked the farm.

Someone monitored the crop.

Someone harvested.

Someone sorted.

Someone packed.

Someone transported.

A wholesaler buys.

A retailer buys.

A market trader buys.

And eventually the onions can reach a mama mboga, a restaurant, a hotel or a household.

That is the ripple effect of a builder.

The builder may own the farm.

But the farm creates economic activity far beyond the farm owner.

This is why Africa needs builders.

Not simply people who want to become wealthy.

But people who create things that allow other people to participate in wealth creation.

WHAT IF EVERY AFRICAN BUILDER THOUGHT THIS WAY?

Imagine a young person builds a farm.

Another builds a food-processing company.

Another builds a logistics company.

Another builds an irrigation company.

Another builds a technology platform connecting farmers to markets.

Another builds cold-storage facilities.

Another builds packaging.

Another builds financial technology for agriculture.

Another builds a restaurant chain buying directly from farmers.

Another builds a hotel sourcing local produce.

Suddenly, one builder is no longer building alone.

Builders create ecosystems.

That is the difference between simply making money and creating economic value.

THE FARM IS ALSO A LESSON IN SYSTEMS

What I find particularly interesting about Guardian's farm is that the pieces are beginning to connect.

Water supports crops.

The farm produces crops.

Poultry is part of the agricultural ecosystem.

Azolla is being explored as a feed source for chickens.

A fish pond is being developed.

The farm is becoming more than a field.

It is becoming a system.

Recent reporting shows Guardian working on a pond where fish and azolla can coexist, with azolla intended for chicken feed. ([Tuko.co.ke - Kenya news.])

That is systems thinking.

And systems thinking is what Africa's next generation needs.

Don't only ask:

What can I sell? another china product.

Ask:

What systems can I connect?

Waste can become input.

A by-product can become another product.

One business can supply another.

One skill can support another.

One asset can create another income stream.

That is how builders multiply value.

BUILDERS MUST ALSO BUILD THEIR HOMES

There is another dimension to this story that should not be ignored.

A person's greatest building project is not always their business.

Sometimes it is their home.

The Bible says:

He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favour from the LORD. Proverbs 18:22

A settled home can become a place from which a person builds.

That does not mean every marriage is perfect.

It does not mean a spouse is responsible for your success.

It means that the relationships closest to you matter.

Your home should not constantly compete with your purpose.

Your partner should understand that you are building.

And you should understand what your partner is building too.

Guardian and Esther have faced noise around their relationship, but what I find compelling is their apparent decision to continue living their lives rather than constantly performing their relationship for public approval.

They seem to have chosen to build instead of constantly explain.

And perhaps that is one of the greatest lessons.

STOP LIVING FOR THE COMMENT SECTION

There is too much noise.

Social media has made everybody a commentator.

Everybody has an opinion about your marriage.

Your age.

Your career.

Your clothes.

Your business.

Your investments.

Your failures.

Your success.

Your choices.

But your life is not a public referendum.

Do you.

Learn.

Listen.

Seek wisdom.

Correct yourself when necessary.

But do not spend your entire life trying to convince people who were never assigned to understand you.

A builder needs thick skin.

You will be misunderstood.

You will be criticised.

You will fail.

You will make mistakes.

You will have seasons when the harvest is small.

Keep building.

WHAT GUARDIAN ANGEL TEACHES THE NOW AND NEXT GENERATION OF BUILDERS

Guardian Angel's journey offers a number of lessons that go far beyond farming.

Build across your life, not just your career.

Your career is one pillar.

Your finances are another.

Your relationships are another.

Your health.

Your spiritual life.

Your knowledge.

Your assets.

Your reputation.

Your contribution.

Build all of them intentionally.

Do not be everywhere.

Choose what matters.

Protect your time.

Protect your energy.

Protect your home.

Protect your vision.

Become multi-skilled.

Your ability to learn a new industry can become one of your greatest assets.

Do not fear starting again.

A successful musician can become a student of agriculture.

A marketer can learn technology.

A farmer can learn digital commerce.

A teacher can build a business.

Your first identity does not have to limit your future.

Learn from people who know what you do not know.

Humility is not weakness.

It is a builder's advantage.

Ignore noise without ignoring wisdom.

Not every critic is a hater.

Not every compliment is wisdom.

Discernment matters.

Invest in infrastructure.

The borehole, water tower and irrigation system may not be glamorous, but they are what make production possible. ([The Standard][1])

Think in systems.

Don't only plant.

Ask how you will harvest, store, distribute, sell and reinvest.

Build for continuity.

The question is not simply:

What can I achieve this year?

The better question is:

What can I build that will still produce value years from now?

THE BUILDER'S LIFE

Perhaps that is what I admire most about watching Guardian Angel and Esther.

Not that their life is perfect.

Not that every decision will be perfect.

Not that every business venture will succeed.

But the visible commitment to building a life instead of living entirely for the noise around them.

A home.

A farm.

A music career.

Investments.

Skills.

Experiences.

Purpose.

They remind us that you do not have to choose between being creative and being an investor.

You do not have to choose between music and farming.

You do not have to choose between building a career and building a home.

You can build multiple pillars as long as you have the wisdom and discipline to structure them.

Do not be all over the place. Build intentionally.

Know what season you are in.

Know what you are building.

Know why you are building it.

Know who is building with you.

Know who you need to learn from.

Know whose voice you can ignore.

And then get back to work.

Because eventually, the people who only saw the dry land will see the farm.

The people who saw the seed will see the harvest.

The people who questioned the vision will see the results.

And the people who understand building will see something deeper:

The harvest was never the miracle. The system was.**

And perhaps the greatest lesson from Guardian Angel's journey is simply this:

Do not spend your life trying to prove people wrong. Spend it building something so meaningful that you no longer need to explain yourself.

Build your life.

Build your home.

Build your skills.

Build your assets.

Build your purpose.

And keep building.
