BUILD THE PLANE WHILE IT’S IN THE AIR
What starts as an idea can become an empire.
I recently came across the story of the founder of Saint Western an entrepreneur based in Texas, USA, who creates customised cowboy hats and boots.
His story reminded me of one powerful truth:
You don't always see the entire empire when you start building.
Sometimes, you simply see the next step.
And you take it.
It Started With a Difficult Season
His entrepreneurial journey was born out of a deeply personal challenge.
He experienced alopecia hair loss that affected more than his appearance. It affected his identity and took him through a difficult season.
But sometimes, the seasons that break us also reveal something within us that was waiting to be built.
Difficult moments can become the soil for elevation and glory.
What looked like a personal struggle became the beginning of a business.
He started with hats.
Then a friend told him:
Hats go with boots.
So he started making boots too.
One thing became another.
And another.
And before you know it, you are no longer building a product. You are building an empire.
That is the power of starting.
ACTION CREATES CLARITY
One of the greatest lessons from his story is this:
Action creates clarity.
Clarity over time creates confidence.
We often want to have everything figured out before we begin.
The perfect business model.
The perfect strategy.
The perfect funding.
The perfect team.
The perfect timing.
But sometimes, clarity doesn't come before action.
Clarity comes because of action.
Start with what you have.
Build what you can.
Learn.
Adjust.
Expand.
Then build again.
DREAM BIGGER
He shared another powerful principle:
Build the plane while it's in the air.
You don't always get to build everything before you launch.
Sometimes you launch, learn, adapt and build while moving.
He once imagined what it would be like to have his hat worn by someone famous.
It was a dream.
Three months later, through a friend and a FaceTime conversation, he received a request to make a hat for that very person.
Think about that.
The vision came before the evidence.
There is something powerful about seeing what does not yet exist.
YOU DON'T HAVE WHAT YOU DON'T SEE
If you cannot see possibilities, you may never pursue them.
But when you can see something in your mind, you give yourself permission to pursue it in reality.
If you can see it, you can begin building toward it.
That doesn't mean every dream will happen exactly as imagined.
It means vision gives direction.
Faith gives courage.
Action gives momentum.
And consistency gives the dream a structure.
DON'T LET THE HURDLE BECOME THE DESTINATION
Your situation is not necessarily your destiny.
Your difficult season is not necessarily your final chapter.
Fear is not a prophecy.
Failure is not a definition.
Doubt is not a destination.
The question is:
What will you build from where you are?
Identify the journey for your life.
Dream.
Build what God has placed in your heart.
And do the work.
THE AFRICAN OPPORTUNITY
This lesson is particularly relevant to Africa.
Africa has no shortage of problems.
But every problem represents a potential opportunity for someone willing to build a solution.
We have millions of young people.
We have creative industries.
We have fashion.
Technology.
Agriculture.
Tourism.
Manufacturing.
Fintech.
Logistics.
Healthcare.
Education.
Energy.
Entertainment.
And a rapidly growing consumer market.
The opportunity is immense.
But opportunity does not build itself.
People do.
Africa doesn't just need more people looking for opportunities.
Africa needs more people creating them.
More founders turning problems into products.
More entrepreneurs turning local ideas into global brands.
More builders creating systems, businesses and institutions that employ people and move entire communities forward.
The Saint Western story is a reminder that you don't have to see the entire empire on day one.
You may only need to see the first product.
The first customer.
The first problem you can solve.
The first step.
Start there.
Then add another.
And another.
And another.
Until one day you look back and realise:
You weren't just building a business.
You were building something much bigger than you imagined.
BUILD AFRICA
Africa's next generation of builders must learn to see beyond the immediate hurdle.
See the possibility.
See the market.
See the solution.
See the global opportunity.
And then build.
Believe in Faith.
Brand with Integrity.
Build in Purpose.
Don't wait until everything is perfect.
Build the plane while it's in the air.
Dream bigger.
Start where you are.
Use what you have.
Solve a problem.
Serve people.
Keep building.
Because sometimes the empire is hidden inside the first small thing you are brave enough to start.
