Numbers that matter most

Africa

Population: Approximately 1.5 billion people.

Youth population: Over 800 million Africans are under the age of 35, making Africa the youngest continent in the world.

Youth unemployment rate: Around 12–13% of young people (ages 15–24) who are actively looking for work are unemployed.

Youth not in employment, education, or training (NEET): In some African regions, roughly 1 in 5 young people are unemployed and disconnected from education or training.

What this means in numbers

If Africa has more than 800 million youth and roughly half are of working age, tens of millions of young Africans are unemployed or underemployed. The bigger challenge is not only unemployment but also informal and low-income work. Most young Africans work in the informal economy rather than formal jobs.

Kenya

Population: About 53–56 million people.

Youth population: More than 75% of Kenyans are below 35 years old, representing over 40 million young people.

Overall unemployment rate: Approximately 5.4% in 2025.

Youth unemployment rate (15–24 years): Approximately 15.2% in 2025.

Estimated numbers

Using a labour force of about 25.5 million people, a 5.4% unemployment rate translates to roughly:

1.3–1.4 million unemployed Kenyans.

For youth:

If Kenya has over 40 million young people and millions are entering the labour market annually, the number of unemployed or underemployed youth runs into several millions depending on the age definition used and whether informal work is included.

The Opportunity for MN Collective

Africa is home to over 800 million young people.

Kenya alone has more than 40 million youth.

More than 1.3 million Kenyans are unemployed, while millions more are underemployed.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of young people enter the job market, but formal jobs are not being created fast enough.

The youth bulge can either become a demographic dividend or a demographic time bomb.

MN Collective exists to help transform potential into productivity by helping people Believe, Brand, and Build.
