A reminder how influence now moves faster than billons of shillings spent in advertising.
iShowSpeed in Kenya:
A Masterclass in Modern Influence Marketing
*****
Who is IShowSpeed?
Darren Jason Watkins Jr., better known as IShowSpeed or simply Speed, is an American YouTuber, livestreamer, and internet personality. He became famous for his energetic and often unpredictable livestreams, gaming content (especially FIFA/EA FC), reactions, football fandom particularly his admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo and IRL (in-real-life) travel streams. Today, he is one of the world's most-followed content creators.
When did he visit Kenya?
IShowSpeed arrived in Nairobi, Kenya, on 11 January 2026 as part of his 28-day "Speed Does Africa" tour. His arrival attracted huge crowds both online and on the streets of Nairobi, with millions of viewers following his livestream.
During his Kenya visit, he:
Toured various parts of Nairobi.
Visited the Mukuru Affordable Housing project.
Met Kenyan content creators and celebrities.
Interacted with government tourism officials.
Visited wildlife and tourism attractions, including the Maasai Mara.
His Kenya stream became one of the most successful stops of his Africa tour, reportedly attracting over 8.5 million live viewers and generating hundreds of thousands of new subscribers for his YouTube channel.
For many Kenyans, his visit was significant because it showcased Kenya's culture, people, tourism attractions, matatu culture, and everyday life to a massive global audience.
Interestingly, if you're referring to your LinkedIn article about his visit, you were among the early voices discussing the opportunity and impact of his Kenya tour before many mainstream conversations picked up on it a good example of how spotting trends early can create visibility and engagement.
******My story
I didn't know who iShowSpeed was until my son asked me, "Mum, do you know iShowSpeed is in town?" A quick search later, the numbers told the story a global Gen Z and Gen Alpha icon with tens of millions of followers, and millions of eyes suddenly locked onto Kenya in real time.
What many may not know is that I was among the first people to write and share insights about his visit to Kenya before everyone jumped onto the conversation. Interestingly, that article became one of my highest-performing LinkedIn posts, attracting over 60 likes, not just from the general public, but from decision-makers, CEOs, Managing Directors, and business leaders.
It was a reminder that you never know which article, piece of content, observation, or insight might become your next breakthrough.
Keep showing up.
Keep writing.
Keep sharing.
Consistency has a way of opening doors when you least expect it.
My first strategic question when I saw the visit was simple:
Where is Magical Kenya?
Where is Tembea Kenya?
Where is the Ministry of Tourism?
Where is the President?
Credit where it is due. The Government of Kenya and Kenya Tourism Board moved with speed. They recognized the opportunity, leveraged his presence, amplified content in real time, and allowed Kenya to be experienced through his lens.
From Carnivore's iconic game meat experience to Nyama Choma at Kenyatta Market, the colorful Nganya matatu culture, the energy of Nairobi's streets, and interactions with ordinary Kenyans, Kenya didn't simply host a visitor.
We showcased our culture.
We showcased our people.
We showcased our authenticity.
And the world watched.
The scale was impossible to ignore. The last time I witnessed such crowds organically gathering on the streets was during the Gen Z maandamano and major national political moments. That level of attention is rare. It cannot be manufactured.
What stood out most was that he hit a major subscriber milestone while in Kenya during his Africa tour. Whether planned or not, that moment permanently connected part of his growth story with Kenya.
But Kenya was only one chapter.
His Africa tour became a continental marketing phenomenon.
In every country he visited, he gave millions of viewers a front-row seat into local culture, music, food, fashion, language, transportation, and daily life. Countries received something advertising budgets often struggle to achieve authentic attention.
The uniqueness of the tour was that every destination told its own story.
Not through polished commercials.
Not through scripted campaigns.
But through real experiences, real reactions, and real people.
The result?
Millions of young and old viewers around the world discovered African destinations they may never have searched for on their own.
Tourism boards, brands, artists, creators, and local businesses all benefited from the visibility generated by a single creator carrying a smartphone and streaming live.
It is a powerful reminder that influence today moves faster than billions of shillings spent on traditional advertising.
This is what modern destination marketing looks like:
• Agile
• Culture-led
• Influence-driven
• Digital-first
• Real-time
When Gen Alpha is locked onto a screen on a Sunday afternoon, the world is watching.
Visibility like this cannot always be bought.
It must be recognized.
It must be seized.
And it must be amplified.
For businesses, governments, destinations, and brands, the lesson is clear:
Attention is the new currency.
Authenticity is the new marketing.
Influence is the new distribution channel.
Kenya understood the assignment.
And for a moment, the world experienced Kenya at speed.
