Who is solving the real problems?

President William Ruto today stood before the world in Baku, Azerbaijan, raising issues many African leaders have spoken about for decades but rarely with such directness. He questioned the global financial architecture that makes Africa borrow at punitive rates, locking the continent into expensive debt because of perceived “risk.” He pointed out the contradiction of Africa a continent of 1.5 billion people and 55 UN member states remaining excluded from permanent representation at the UN Security Council, despite most Security Council discussions being about African conflicts and crises.

That message resonates beyond Kenya. It speaks to historical injustice, unequal global systems, climate financing, housing support, and the future of African cities. Ruto’s argument is that Africa cannot build sustainable and livable societies if the international system continues treating the continent as a permanent risk zone instead of an equal partner or atleast a representation of Africa 🌍 countries.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has intensified attacks against the same administration he once defended passionately. He now accuses President Ruto’s government of presiding over a fuel pricing crisis and alleges corruption within the government-to-government fuel import arrangement. He claims powerful individuals are benefiting while ordinary Kenyans struggle with record fuel prices. 

This is where the political paradox emerges.

When Gachagua was Deputy President, he publicly defended government policy and stood beside Ruto as part of the “Kenya Kwanza” project. Today, he positions himself as one of the administration’s fiercest critics. Supporters of Ruto therefore ask a legitimate question: if the system was broken, why didn’t Gachagua speak while inside government? And if he truly believed in the policies then, what changed now?

On the other hand, Gachagua’s supporters argue that political fallout exposed internal power struggles and gave him access to information he can now speak about publicly. They see him as someone revealing what happens behind closed doors in government.

While Ruto operates like a global statesman  constantly moving across countries, speaking about continental reform, climate finance, trade, digital economies, and Africa’s place in the world. His supporters see a president thinking beyond local politics and trying to position Kenya as a regional and global voice.

Gachagua, meanwhile, speaks directly to local frustrations and on behalf of Kenyans, high fuel prices, cost of living, anger in the transport sector, and distrust of government deals. 

The danger for Kenya is when these two narratives stop complementing each other and become mutually destructive. One side talks global reform while citizens struggle locally. The other amplifies public anger but risks appearing opportunistic because it comes from someone who was recently inside the same administration.

As for the “profits” Gachagua alleges President Ruto is making from the G-to-G fuel arrangement, those remain allegations that have not been independently verified publicly. No official investigation or court finding has confirmed the claims so far.

Ultimately, I am asking one simple question: who is saying the truth?  who is solving the real problems? The world stage speeches matter. But so do fuel prices, transport costs, and the daily struggles of ordinary citizens.

That is the political battle now shaping Kenya global leadership versus domestic frustration, diplomacy versus economic pain, and former allies now fighting to define who truly speaks for the people.

One thing I agree with former deputy president  is CS transport there is no need of bringing up the former President leadership in every issue brought up by Kenyans.
