A Glimpse Of Pure Luxury

What is luxury? How does luxury feel? Why luxury? Who wears luxury?

On Friday, 22nd May 2026, I experienced luxury in a way that left me questioning life, mindset, value, branding, dreams, and possibility.

There is this store ( Art of Luxury Africa at GTC  Mall 3rd floor) that has partially opened, a proper luxury store, the only one in Kenya and actually one of the very few of its kind in Africa. The only other stores like it are in India and Dubai. This store gets clients from all over the world. I walked into the store because I also work for a luxury brand and wanted to see what they had stocked and how we could possibly work together.

The moment you enter luxury, you feel it. You experience it. Luxury is not just seen, it is felt. From the service, the warm welcome from the staff, the atmosphere, the calmness, the attention to detail, the scent, the atmospheres,  the aesthics, the furniture.  everything immediately tells you that you are in a different world, everything in luxury communicates. The staff uniforms looked very classy, subtle, neat, with soft beautiful nufe earthy colours. Nothing loud. Everything intentional.

I had gone with a colleague, and immediately we were ushered in and welcomed warmly. We were introduced to the store manager, a young lady, but honestly the perfect fit for that role. She carried herself with elegance, confidence, calmness, and excellence. As they speak to you, they do not discriminate. It is the warm smiles, the stories, the time they take to explain the different brands. They do not focus first on the selling price. They focus on value and experience.

We walked to one of the watch sections, and they began telling me about one particular brand and watch. They explained that the moment these pieces are stocked in Dubai, they are sold out almost immediately. I asked her how much it was. Instead of immediately telling me the price, they ushered us into a fitting area that felt more like a luxury lounge. They asked us to sit down comfortably and offered us our preferred drinks water, tea, coffee, champagne only for guests who shop with them eventually when fully operational but we declined.

Then they continued telling us about the luxury store that is not yet officially opened.

After that, they brought the watch they had earlier shown us for fitting.

The attendant walked in wearing gloves and carefully dressed my hand with the watch before even mentioning the price. They continued explaining the craftsmanship, the history, and the uniqueness of the watch. Then finally came the price reveal.

The watch was $38, 180 USD. Over 4.9 million Kenya shillings.

I was like… sorry? Four point what? What?

And that is when I understood something.

Luxury is an experience.

Luxury is a lifestyle.

Luxury is in a name- the bible says a great name is better than gold ✨️  and silver.

Luxury are moments - emotional connection

In Luxury everything communicates

The entire experience, from the moment we walked in until the time they finally mentioned the price honestly, if I had the money and that kind of mindset at that moment, I would probably have bought it there and then. It is the value, the quality, how the watch fits and sits on your hand, the story behind it, the craftsmanship, and the power of the brand name itself.

The watch I had picked was a gold Cartier. Cartier a brand that has existed since 1847.

Founder Name: Louis - Francois Cartier

Origin: Paris, France

Industry: Luxury jewelery. Watches and Accessories

It's now 179 years old known as the jeweler of kings and the king of jewelers.

The funniest and most interesting part is how the attendants make you feel worthwhile. In many places, I imagine clients who can afford such things “look” like they can afford them, and then there is us (on a lighter note). But here, you do not feel profiled. They speak to you as if you belong there too. The store manager telling me how they will treat a president walking into the store is how they will treat everyone walking into the store, known or unknown. They explain how well it fits you. They tell you yes, you can afford it. You can buy it. Manifest it. Come back for it.

At one point I joked, “Even if I paid slowly, with Kes 4.9 million when would I ever finish paying?”

But they give you time to feel it, enjoy it, experience it. The feeling of gold on my hand was really out of this world. When I wore it, price was not even in mind. It was how I felt wearing it on me.

And eventually, after that whole experience, after wearing a 4.9 million shilling watch on my wrist, I told them:

“One day I will come back and buy it.”

And the attendant responded so confidently:

“Whatever you manifest, you can. I know and believe one day you will come back. This is your watch. I look forward to seeing it on you.” They made me feel that I CAN buy the piece.

I walked out of that space with so many questions in my mind.

We are all in the same world with clients who walk into that store and buy those products instantly. A store where nothing is less than $1000. They have every luxury brand you can think of Rolex watches, Fendi, Balenciaga, luxury bags, shoes, clothes everything luxury and luxury brands.

But the difference between this store and many other stores that claim to sell luxury is this: their products are current. What you see on the runway today is what they stock. Others sell off-season items. Here, they sell what has just been released.

And it reminded me of a work activity we had this past week. It is an annual activity the company has to appreciate its associates. One of the activities was where heads of departments exchanged roles with their teams in different departments. One of my colleagues worked at the front desk as a concierge. You might ask:

Who is a concierge?

A concierge is a professional whose role is to provide personalized assistance, exclusive service, convenience, and comfort to clients or guests. In luxury spaces like hotels, residences, or luxury retail stores, a concierge ensures clients feel valued and taken care of. They help with reservations, recommendations, special requests, transportation, lifestyle arrangements, and creating seamless experiences. A concierge is not just customer service they are experience curators. They make people feel important.

That same colleague later told me about driving the latest 2026 Porsche Cayenne, a Range Rover Vogue, and experiencing luxury cars. This is part of what concierge does driving guests’ cars safely into the parking. It is the name dropping. “I drove a Vogue, I drove a Porsche,” etc.

Before you buy luxury, you know or buy the name or the brand.

Luxury starts with brand names. Branding first. Quality first. Packaging first. Before a client even experiences your product or service, branding already speaks for you.

Even in the luxury store or organisations, the first thing attendants mention is the brand name. The name itself carries power.

Being a marketer, I understand the power of branding and why companies and even individuals should take time to define themselves first. That is branding. How you present yourself before you even speak. The next thing is how you show up consistently as a brand. Quality, service, craftsmanship, etc. 👌

As we continued walking around the store, because I like data and understanding markets, I asked the store manager:

“Have clients actually just walked in and bought these items?”

And she said yes. In fact, just the previous day, a watch had been bought.

As we were in the store, there were also clients casually walking in, looking, shopping, buying.

One thing about luxury there is no clutter. You will see few pieces, a lot of space, one item here, another there. Every single piece is a masterpiece and can easily be spotted.

I spotted a bag, and theatrically the first thing I asked was the price. But again, before they mention the price, they first tell you the story of the bag, the craftsmanship, the special weaving technique, the details behind it. Then finally they reveal the price.

The bag was $38,000.

Again, I converted it mentally into Kenya shillings. (My country currency)

Then I asked:

“What kind of clients come here? Who are they? How do they behave? Where do they come from? Do they negotiate or ask for discounts?” etc etc.

I had to understand their clients.

And they explained that discounts are almost unheard of. Of course, one or two people might ask, but clients who shop there know exactly what they want. They know luxury, they know quality, and they come prepared.

Then they explained how they build a client database. Meaning the next time you walk in, they already know your preferences, what you like, your style, your interests.

That is luxury.

Imagine walking into a store you have only visited once and they greet you by name.

Luxury is excellence.

It is consistency.

It is perfecting the same things repeatedly until they become seamless.and exceptional.

Walking into a space and hearing:

“Good morning Mr… Good morning Miss… can I serve you your usual?”

Immediately you feel valued, appreciated, seen, welcomed.

That warmth that is luxury.

As she continued walking us around the store, in my heart I was still questioning:

Why would someone buy shoes worth 500,000 KES? I mean, you walk in them and eventually they wear out.

But then I realized luxury is a mindset.

The people who buy these products do not think from a place of lack. Luxury is an abundance mentality. It is how something makes you feel when you wear it. And honestly, I can tell you, the items in that store just like where I currently work, which is also luxury brand you feel it. You experience it. I love shoes, and some of the pieces in the store were remarkable pieces ❤️. I cannot stop thinking about them or imagine how I would feel in them.

Where would I walk in them surely? Again mindset!

The store itself has lounge areas, a bar, cigar spaces. Guests are welcomed with champagne when fully operational.

After the walkthrough, the manager introduced us to the owner. Earlier we had actually passed him outside and he had looked at us, but we did not know he was the owner.

And surprisingly, he was such a simple man. Very humble. The kind of person you could easily walk past and never know who he is.

And again I learned something:

Luxury is not noise: "My current boss tells me that all the time. Less is more.

Luxury is not loud.

Luxury is not clutter.

Luxury is clean.

Luxury is simplicity.

Luxury is less.

Luxury  is feeling valued and understood

Truly, less is more.

Even the store itself had very few pieces, but masterpieces.

We sat down and discussed business, how our brands could potentially work together in the luxury market. The owner took his time with us. No rush. He explained many things, showed us a special guest room with a beautiful view where VIP guests would relax and be hosted.

By the time we were leaving, honestly, we did not want to leave.

It was a masterpiece experience.

Today I am left with so many questions. I have woken up thinking so many things, wondering why do we settle for less? Why do we accept mediocrity or settle for it? This is me asking myself. This life will not be relived. And it is not just because it is luxury or focused on material things, but why do we accept common? Why are our mindsets limited, doubtful, lack-driven  name all the negative and limited states.

What makes me and the person who can afford to shop at those stores different?

I am talking about the ones that get their wealth genuinely, not the ones who steal and show us a lavish lifestyle from stealing.

A lot of questions are lingering in my mind.

Is it mindset? Is it belief? Is it my small faith? Is it hard work? Many work hard?

Even as I work for the luxury brand I am working for, I see the experiences and treatment our guests receive and I ask  why am I not the one as a guest and not the guest-serving staff?

This is not out of envy, but wanting better, wanting more, and not settling for less. Loving the experiences and the space our guests are enjoying.

I recall telling my sister when I first joined the brand and how it felt the first day at work. I told her, “One day I want to come in as a guest.”

The feeling of luxury is not even the money itself. It is how you feel when you walk into a quiet clean space, swim in clean blue waters, walk into a clean room with great aesthetics. It is how you feel when you have a healthy meal, a salad. It is how you feel when a stranger smiles and says hello to you genuinely and goes ahead and finds out how you are doing.

It is how you feel when you are at peace.

Surreal. That is how luxury to me feels now.

It is peace.

In my current company we define our guests as fulfilled and mindful.

Luxury is a holistic approach to life and things.

It feels like breathing clean air.

What is your definition of luxury?

I am asking myself so many questions. The people who experience these spaces were they born into it? Wealth, money, etc.? Or just like me, did they stumble on these experiences that changed their mindsets to do more, be more, work more, experience more, and live fully?

Not saying pursuing average is bad. We are different. Others are okay with being okay.

Just like I do not think I want the whole world, but I have been in average all my life and I do not like it. I want more. I want to do better, be better, experience more of this beautiful life that God has created for us and while at it help others too. Be better and do better, live better.

So I ask again.

That is what we ask ourselves most of the time when we meet or encounter people in powerful positions or people we emulate and see from afar. Successful in their own way and not just success from money, but an all-round life. Achievements in many things, etc.

Who am I?

What am I doing with my life?

What is the difference between me and the people who can walk in and buy a 4 million shilling bag instantly?

Why not me?

Luxury is simple, but when you understand the quality, excellent workmanship, history, storytelling, time taken, detail and exclusivity (limited editions verbage in luxury) behind every piece, then you understand it is not just about the price point.

Today I am deep in thought. I cannot stop thinking about that experience.

It felt good. Really  really great.

And I keep thinking about what that attendant told me:

“You can buy that watch.”

***

Can I? I ask? When? How?

I do not even own anything worth that amount currently.

Can I really walk into that store one day and purchase a Kes 4.9 million shilling watch and a luxury bag?

Those are the questions I am asking myself.

As we walked out, my colleague told me she had always wanted the famous red-bottom sole shoes by Christian Louboutin. Original red bottoms are not just shoes. They are a statement. A premium luxury brand.

She said she manifested them. And today she owns a pair.

I Say. Nothing is impossible.

If you can see it, you can have it too.

Anyone can.

Believe you can have anything.

Today, I am raising my FAITH and belief that one day I will be able to walk into that same store or another luxury store somewhere in the world and confidently buy a watch worth 4.9 million Kenya shillings or $38,180.

There is a verse in the Bible that says:

“As a man thinketh, so is he.” Proverbs 23:7

“For as he thinketh, so is he.”

And also:

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”  Philippians 4:13

Nothing is impossible through Jesus.

As I end this, I am reminded we are not all the same. We all have different goals, likings, focus, and drives. But at the end of the day, do not just settle for less. Do more. Be more in whatever capacity. Just strive for me and dont settle for less.

This life cannot be repeated. I can only pray and hope to live the best of it.

Think abundance. Be Valuable. Believe anything is possible with God, since I am a believer.

Mindset too shapes who we are and  Become.
